Condensing Units.

A condensing unit is the outdoor half of a split refrigeration system — compressor, condenser coil and receiver in one frame, factory-piped, charged and tested. The indoor evaporator connects to it with two refrigerant lines and the room is cooling.

That simplicity is the point. A condensing unit removes the plant room from the project. There is no compressor rack to design, no condenser to position separately, no oil management to commission on site. For cold rooms, display cases, process cooling and any duty below about 50 kW, it is usually the fastest path from purchase order to operating temperature.

Prime Coil supplies two families: water-cooled semi-hermetic units for sites with cooling water and noise-sensitive locations, and air-cooled units built around Dorin compressors for general outdoor installation.

Water-cooled condensing units

A wide selection of semi-hermetic models built for HCFC and HFC refrigerants. Water cooling gives a lower and more stable condensing temperature than air cooling — it follows the water temperature rather than the ambient, so performance does not swing with the weather or the time of day.

Water-cooled suits indoor installation where there is no outdoor space or no route for refrigerant lines to an outdoor condenser. It also suits noise-sensitive sites: the compressor is the only moving part with no condenser fans, so sound levels are significantly lower than an equivalent air-cooled unit.

The trade-off is a cooling water circuit — either a tower or a process water return — with the treatment and pump energy that comes with it. On a site that already runs cooling water for other loads, the marginal cost of adding the condensing unit to the circuit is small.

Air-cooled is the default choice for outdoor installation where water is not available or not justified. No cooling tower, no water treatment, no pump — just power and two refrigerant lines to the evaporator.

The trade-off is ambient dependence. On a 45°C Delhi afternoon the condensing temperature will be higher than a water-cooled unit would deliver, and compressor power rises with it. If the peak-ambient hours coincide with the peak cooling load — which in cold storage they usually do — the unit is working hardest when it is least efficient. Sizing the condenser for the real peak ambient rather than the catalogue standard is the single most important decision on an air-cooled installation.

Water-cooled or air-cooled — choosing

Choose water-cooled when cooling water already exists on site, when the unit must install indoors, when noise is a constraint, or when you need the most stable condensing temperature regardless of ambient.

Choose air-cooled when there is no cooling water, when outdoor space is available, when the installation needs to be self-contained, or when the priority is the lowest-maintenance configuration.

Both families pair with our cold room evaporators and unit coolers and with the blast freezer range. On larger duties where a condensing unit runs out of capacity, the next step is a packaged chiller or a rack system — different architecture, same Freon range.

Water-cooled or air-cooled condensing unit?

Water-cooled when cooling water exists on site, the unit installs indoors, noise is a constraint, or you need stable condensing temperature regardless of ambient. Air-cooled when there is no cooling water, outdoor space is available, the installation should be self-contained, or you want the lowest-maintenance option. We supply both and will say which suits your site.

What sound level can I expect from the air-cooled unit?

From 48 dBA on the smaller models. Larger units with higher airflow run higher, but 48 dBA at rated distance is quieter than a normal conversation. If sound is critical — residential proximity, office adjacency — the water-cooled unit is typically the better path, since it has no condenser fans.
