Why wide openings need double-leaf, not oversized single-leaf

A cold storage door serving forklift and pallet traffic often needs a clear opening of 2.5 metres or more. Building that opening as a single-leaf door is physically possible up to about 3,500 mm, but the economics and engineering favour double-leaf design at any width above 2,400 mm:

Door weight is manageable. A 3-metre single-leaf door with 120 mm PUF insulation weighs approximately 180-220 kg — heavy enough to require reinforced tracks and specialty bearings, and hard on any operator opening it manually. Two 1.5-metre leaves weigh 90-110 kg each — comfortable for manual operation and standard hardware.

Storage envelope is smaller. When a single-leaf door slides open, the panel needs unobstructed wall space equal to the door width — plus additional clearance. A 3-metre single-leaf door needs 3+ metres of clear wall to the side. A double-leaf door needs only 1.5 metres of clear wall on each side. Facility layouts that couldn’t accommodate a wide single-leaf door often work with double-leaf.

Operating force per operator is lower. Wide single-leaf doors require significant force to open — either operator strain or higher-cost motor drives. Double-leaf doors are opened by two operators (or automated with two smaller motors) with lower force each.

Central meeting seal doesn’t compromise hermetic sealing. Correctly-engineered meeting-point seals produce sealing performance equivalent to single-leaf doors of the same construction quality — the same 45° geometry, same four-side gasket, plus an additional vertical compression seal at the centre where the leaves meet.

Aluminium extrusion track — dual profile for opposing motion

Every double leaf sliding door for cold storage uses an aluminium extrusion overhead track engineered specifically for two-panel opposing-direction operation. The track profile has two indentation zones — one that guides the left leaf closing rightward, and one that guides the right leaf closing leftward. Both leaves execute the same 3D closing movement (horizontal, downward, inward) simultaneously, compressing gaskets against the frame and against each other at the central meeting point.

Meeting-point seal — the critical engineering detail

The one design element unique to double-leaf sliding doors is the seal at the centre where the two leaves meet when closed. This is where cheaper double-leaf doors fail — they use a simple butt joint that develops gaps as the doors settle over years of operation, or they use a soft flexible seal that compresses too easily and doesn’t hold pressure differentials.

Our meeting-point seal uses a specific profile designed for continuous compression duty:

  • Overlap geometry — one leaf has a projecting profile, the other has a matching recess; they interlock when closed
  • Dual-lip gasket — primary seal on the projecting profile, secondary seal in the recess

Does the meeting-point seal really work as well as a continuous frame seal?

Can I retrofit double-leaf doors to existing single-leaf openings?

Only if the existing opening is wide enough for double-leaf configuration — typically 2,400 mm minimum. If your existing single-leaf door is smaller than that, retrofit isn't practical. If existing opening is wider, we can convert it to double-leaf during a scheduled shutdown.
